Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers. A more confident start. Explore what to expect before, during, and after physical therapy at Greenbelt PT.

Getting Started

How Do I Schedule an Appointment?

Call (301) 477-1987 to discuss an evaluation. Tell us the reason for your visit and whether insurance, an accident claim, or a work-related injury is involved. Our team can explain what information is needed. An email inquiry does not confirm an appointment.

Do I Need a Referral or Prior Authorization?

Requirements depend on your coverage, claim, and circumstances. Before your first visit, call with your referral and insurance or claim information so we can review the next steps. A therapy recommendation does not itself establish insurance authorization.

What Should I Bring to My First Visit?

Bring photo identification, insurance details, your referral if applicable, relevant medical instructions, a medication list, and any available claim or authorization information. After surgery, bring the surgeon’s protocol and restrictions. Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and access to the area being evaluated.

How Early Should I Arrive?

Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first appointment to allow time for check-in and paperwork. Call ahead if you need help preparing for the visit or have questions about access to the clinic.

Where Is Greenbelt PT Located?

Our clinic is at 7241 Hanover Parkway, Suite A, Greenbelt, Maryland 20770. Call (301) 477-1987 for appointment questions or directions.

Your Evaluation & Treatment

What Happens at My First Evaluation?

Your therapist listens to your story, reviews relevant medical history and precautions, and assesses the movement and functional abilities related to your concerns. You will discuss goals, treatment options, and a recommended plan. Tell us which daily activities, work tasks, or hobbies are difficult.

What Treatments Might Be Included?

Depending on your evaluation, care may include manual therapy, joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, functional activities, balance training, gait training, flexibility, strengthening, and posture or body mechanics education. Electrical stimulation or hot/cold therapy may be used when appropriate. Your therapist selects treatments for your needs.

How Many Visits Will I Need?

There is no standard number for every patient. Frequency and duration depend on your injury, goals, medical precautions, progress, and any authorization requirements. Your therapist discusses recommendations and adjusts the plan as your needs change.

Will Physical Therapy Hurt?

Some activities may feel challenging or produce temporary discomfort. Tell your therapist what you feel during and after treatment so intensity and activities can be adjusted. Report new, severe, or worsening symptoms rather than pushing through them.

Will I Have Exercises to Do at Home?

Your therapist may prescribe a home program with instructions on technique, frequency, and precautions. Ask for clarification if an exercise is unclear and report changes in symptoms. Follow your own plan rather than exercises prescribed for another person.

Do You Provide Rehabilitation Before and After Surgery?

Yes. We provide pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation when appropriate. Care follows your surgical instructions and healing precautions and may address movement, strength, walking, and daily function. Bring your surgeon’s protocol and any restrictions.

Auto Accidents & Pedestrian Injuries

Can You Help After a Motor Vehicle Accident?

We provide individualized rehabilitation for accident-related musculoskeletal injuries, including whiplash and neck, back, shoulder, and other joint concerns. Start with appropriate medical assessment after the accident. Therapy begins when it is clinically appropriate and required arrangements are in place.

What If Pain Starts Days After the Accident?

Some symptoms appear after the collision rather than immediately. Contact a medical professional for assessment instead of assuming delayed pain is unimportant. Share any new symptoms with your therapist and bring medical instructions to your appointment.

Do You Treat People Who Were Hit by a Car While Walking?

Yes, we can provide appropriate physical rehabilitation after pedestrian injuries once the patient has been medically assessed and is ready for therapy. The plan follows the diagnosed injuries, fracture or surgical precautions, and individual needs for walking, balance, strength, and everyday activities.

When Should I Seek Urgent Medical Care Instead of PT?

Seek urgent medical assessment after a significant collision or fall, especially with head injury concerns, suspected fracture, inability to bear weight, severe or worsening symptoms, or new neurological changes. New bowel or bladder problems with back pain, progressive weakness, or major walking difficulty should not wait for a routine therapy appointment. Call 911 for an emergency.

Workers’ Compensation & Returning to Work

Do You Treat Work-Related Injuries?

Yes. We provide rehabilitation for work-related musculoskeletal injuries and functional limitations. Call with your referral, claim number, adjuster contact, any treatment authorization, and current work restrictions so we can discuss arrangements before care.

What Is a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)?

An FCE is a structured assessment of selected physical abilities in relation to functional or work demands. Testing may examine activities such as lifting, carrying, positional tolerance, or mobility when appropriate. The scope depends on the referral and safety considerations. It is an assessment, rather than a guarantee of full-duty clearance.

What Are Work Conditioning and Work Hardening?

These are structured, job-focused rehabilitation approaches that may help rebuild physical capacity and tolerance for work tasks. The program selected depends on your assessment, referral, restrictions, job demands, and authorization. Ask our team which service may fit your situation.

Who Decides When I Can Return to Work?

Your therapist can measure function, document progress, and communicate findings to the appropriate treating professionals. Follow the responsible medical provider’s clearance and restrictions and any case requirements. Feeling less pain alone does not establish readiness for every job demand.

Can You Communicate With My Adjuster or Case Manager?

Our office can coordinate appropriate treatment information with involved providers, adjusters, nurse case managers, or attorneys, subject to applicable privacy, documentation, and authorization requirements. Please provide current contact details and ask how any required releases are handled.

Insurance, Liability Claims & Attorney Liens

Do You Accept Attorney Liens?

Yes. Greenbelt PT accepts attorney liens subject to case review and agreed arrangements. Contact our office with your attorney’s information to discuss documentation and financial terms before beginning care. A lien arrangement does not guarantee insurance payment or a legal outcome.

Can You Help After a Slip, Fall, or Property-Related Accident?

We provide rehabilitation for injuries sustained in slip-and-fall and other accidents when therapy is appropriate. This may include injuries in a store, parking lot, or on a sidewalk. Treatment focuses on your diagnosed injuries and functional needs; the clinic does not determine legal fault.

Will Insurance or a Claim Pay for All Treatment?

Coverage and financial responsibility depend on your specific plan, claim, authorizations, and arrangements. Contact our office and the responsible insurer or claim representative to confirm benefits and patient responsibility before care. Do not assume a claim number or referral guarantees payment.

What Records Can Physical Therapy Provide?

Clinical records may include the evaluation, reported symptoms, objective findings, functional limitations, treatment notes, progress reports, and reevaluations. Records support clinical care and may be requested through appropriate channels. Ask our office about secure records requests and any required authorization.

Does Therapy Documentation Determine My Settlement?

No. Documentation describes clinical findings, treatment, and progress. It does not establish legal liability, guarantee a settlement, or promise a particular recovery timeline. Ask an appropriate legal professional about your individual claim.

Appointments & Staying on Track

What If I Need to Cancel or Reschedule?

Please give at least 24 hours’ notice when cancelling or rescheduling. Call (301) 477-1987 so we can help with another appointment. Ask the office about any applicable appointment policies.

What If My Symptoms Change Between Visits?

Tell your therapist about new or worsening symptoms, changes in medical instructions, or difficulty with your home program. Contact the appropriate medical professional promptly for concerning symptoms; do not wait for the next scheduled therapy visit if urgent assessment is needed.

How Can I Help My Therapist Understand My Progress?

Give concrete examples, such as how long you can sit, how far you can walk, whether you can climb stairs, or which work tasks remain difficult. Attend recommended visits when possible, follow your prescribed home program, and communicate barriers so your plan can be adjusted.

Can I Send Medical or Claim Details by Email?

For a general email inquiry, include only your name and callback number. Avoid sending sensitive medical or claim information by ordinary email. Call our office to ask how to share documents or request records securely.
