Understand Your Care

What Is Kinesiology Taping?

Kinesiology tape is elastic adhesive tape placed on the skin in a pattern chosen for a specific goal. It allows movement and feels different from rigid athletic strapping or a brace. Your therapist may consider a short trial, then assess whether it changes comfort or helps you perform a relevant task.

Your therapist connects this approach to the findings from your evaluation and the goals you choose together. We discuss what a useful response would look like and whether this treatment belongs in your plan.

Potential Patient Benefits

How It May Help You

01

Provide a Movement Cue

Contact with the skin may help some patients notice an area or a movement pattern during activity.

02

Offer Temporary Comfort

Some patients prefer the sensation during exercise, although benefits vary and evidence is uncertain for several conditions.

03

Complement Active Rehabilitation

Taping can be combined with graded movement and exercise when it makes participation easier.

Your Visit

What to Expect

Your therapist checks skin condition, adhesive sensitivity, and the goal for taping. We explain application, removal, and the signs that mean the tape should come off.

You repeat a relevant movement after application. The tape is used only if tolerated and useful; your program does not depend on wearing it indefinitely.

We check how treatment affects both your symptoms and a relevant movement or activity. Your feedback helps guide the next step, including changing the approach when it is not useful.

Between Appointments

Carry Progress Home

Follow the wear and removal instructions provided. Remove tape if itching, rash, blistering, increasing swelling, or altered sensation develops. Do not reapply a pattern without guidance.

Let us know how you feel later in the day and during your normal routine. A treatment that feels comfortable in the clinic should also fit into a manageable recovery plan at home.

Individualized Decisions

When We Adapt Your Care

Adhesive allergy, fragile or damaged skin, and circulation concerns require consideration. Evidence of meaningful benefit is uncertain, including for rotator cuff disease. Tape should not be described as realigning joints or guaranteeing faster healing.

Share your medical history, medications, recent procedures, and any change in symptoms. We can discuss alternatives when a technique is not suitable for you.

Questions About Kinesiology Taping

Know What to Expect

Is kinesiology tape the same as a brace?

No. Flexible tape provides much less mechanical restraint. If you need a brace or specific protection, taping is not a substitute.

How will this fit with my other treatments?

Your therapist selects complementary approaches around the limitations found during your evaluation. This treatment may be paired with exercise, movement practice, or education when those approaches support your goals.

How many sessions will I need?

The schedule depends on your condition, healing stage, progress, and relevant authorization. We reassess your response rather than promising a fixed number of treatments or a guaranteed outcome.
