Understand Your Care

What Is Fall Prevention?

A fall can reflect several interacting factors, including reduced leg strength, balance changes, medication effects, vision problems, or hazards in the home. Fall prevention starts by understanding your history of falls and near falls. Physical therapy addresses movement-related risks and helps identify other concerns to discuss with the appropriate clinician.

Your therapist connects this approach to the findings from your evaluation and the goals you choose together. We discuss what a useful response would look like and whether this treatment belongs in your plan.

Potential Patient Benefits

How It May Help You

01

Improve Physical Readiness

Build the strength and balance needed for rising, stepping, and responding to changes in position.

02

Recognize Practical Risks

Discuss walking routes, footwear, clutter, lighting, and situations that commonly cause difficulty.

03

Support Continued Activity

Work toward moving with appropriate confidence so fear of falling does not unnecessarily limit participation.

Your Visit

What to Expect

We assess walking, transfers, balance, and relevant strength, and ask about dizziness, assistive devices, and recent falls.

Training may include chair rises, supported stepping, controlled turns, and safe device use. Together we develop priorities for home safety and continued practice.

We check how treatment affects both your symptoms and a relevant movement or activity. Your feedback helps guide the next step, including changing the approach when it is not useful.

Between Appointments

Carry Progress Home

Carry out only the exercises demonstrated for your level of balance. Keep pathways well lit and clear, use prescribed devices, and ask about a plan for getting help if you fall.

Let us know how you feel later in the day and during your normal routine. A treatment that feels comfortable in the clinic should also fit into a manageable recovery plan at home.

Individualized Decisions

When We Adapt Your Care

A fall with head injury, inability to bear weight, severe pain, or new neurological symptoms requires prompt medical evaluation. No program can eliminate all fall risk.

Share your medical history, medications, recent procedures, and any change in symptoms. We can discuss alternatives when a technique is not suitable for you.

Questions About Fall Prevention

Know What to Expect

Do I need to wait until I fall to start?

No. Near falls, feeling unsteady, or avoiding activities because of fear are good reasons to discuss an assessment. Prevention can begin before a serious fall occurs.

How will this fit with my other treatments?

Your therapist selects complementary approaches around the limitations found during your evaluation. This treatment may be paired with exercise, movement practice, or education when those approaches support your goals.

How many sessions will I need?

The schedule depends on your condition, healing stage, progress, and relevant authorization. We reassess your response rather than promising a fixed number of treatments or a guaranteed outcome.
