Post-Surgical Physical Therapy

Back Surgery Rehabilitation

Individualized rehabilitation after lumbar decompression, discectomy, fusion, or selected disc procedures, with attention to daily and work activities.

← Post-Surgical Rehabilitation / Back Recovery

Your Procedure. Your Recovery.

A Plan for Life After Back Surgery

Back surgery may reduce pressure on nerves, stabilize spinal segments, or address another specific problem. Rehabilitation starts with understanding the procedure and restrictions, then works toward the walking, transfers, strength, and activity tolerance needed in your routine.

At Greenbelt Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, we review the operation, procedure date, current symptoms, and your surgeon’s instructions. Your evaluation helps establish goals for the activities that matter to you, with progress guided by healing, function, and medical clearance.

Common Back Procedures

Lumbar Fusion

A procedure such as an interbody fusion aims to stabilize selected segments. Rehabilitation protects healing and develops function without trying to mobilize fused levels.

Potential Patient Benefits

How Physical Therapy May Help

01

Walking and Everyday Transfers

Build an appropriate walking routine and strategies for getting in and out of bed or a chair.

02

Trunk and Hip Capacity

Progress permitted control and strength without exceeding bending, lifting, or twisting restrictions.

03

Gradual Work Preparation

Connect recovery with approved sitting, standing, carrying, and other job demands.

Progress by Readiness

A Gradual Path Back to Activity

01 /

Protect & Understand

Review the repair and medical instructions, learn the approved daily movements, and use prescribed protection or assistance. Your therapist adapts activities to what is currently permitted.

02 /

Restore Allowed Abilities

Work on the motion, control, and muscle function appropriate to this stage. Exercises, hands-on care, and symptom-management tools are considered only when suitable for the procedure.

03 /

Build Useful Function

Progress toward meaningful tasks as healing and clearance allow. Changes in resistance, distance, repetition, or task complexity depend on your response rather than a universal weekly schedule.

Recovery in Real Life

Daily Activities & Work Goals

Goals may include walking farther, tolerating a commute, managing household tasks, or progressing approved lifting. Heavy labor and long shifts require more preparation than symptom relief alone.

For a work-related operation, share your essential duties, current work-status note, and approved care information. Therapy supports functional recovery; it does not by itself establish work clearance, claim acceptance, or a guaranteed return date.

Procedure-Specific Care

Protect What Is Healing

Follow brace and activity instructions specific to your surgery. New bowel or bladder dysfunction, saddle numbness, or rapidly worsening leg weakness requires emergency medical assessment. Do not start traction or forceful spinal techniques over a postoperative area without explicit clearance.

Follow your discharge instructions for wound concerns and warning signs. Contact your surgical team about increasing redness, drainage, fever, or unexpected symptom changes. Chest pain or sudden breathing difficulty needs emergency medical attention.

Your Questions, Answered

Preparing for Back Rehabilitation

Will therapy restore movement at a fused spinal level?

No. Fusion intentionally limits movement at the treated segment. Rehabilitation emphasizes useful overall function, appropriate movement elsewhere, strength, and activity tolerance within surgical guidance.

When can I start physical therapy?

The appropriate start and content of treatment depend on the operation and the surgeon’s instructions. Contact our office with your referral and protocol; do not start an online exercise program in place of prescribed postoperative care.

Will my plan include strengthening right away?

Not after every procedure. Some tissues need a period of protection or controlled motion before resistance. The sequence is selected for your repair, examination, and medical guidance.

Can you tell me exactly when I will be fully recovered?

Recovery varies with the operation, tissue healing, other health conditions, and the activities you need to regain. We discuss progress and milestones without promising a fixed timeline or outcome.
