Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE)

A structured assessment of physical abilities to help inform rehabilitation and return-to-work planning.

At Greenbelt Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, we listen to your concerns, assess your movement, and develop a plan around the activities that matter to you.

Work-Focused Support

Understand Your Abilities in Relation to Your Work.

A Functional Capacity Evaluation looks at how a person performs selected physical tasks. The assessment can help describe current abilities and limitations in relation to relevant job demands. It is an evaluation rather than a course of treatment.

When job information is available, the evaluator can consider the demands of the position alongside the activities assessed. Findings provide information for the provider and others involved in your rehabilitation; they do not replace the medical or administrative decisions made by those responsible for your case.

Your Questions, Answered

Good to Know

Is an FCE the same as a physical therapy treatment visit?

No. An FCE is an assessment of functional abilities. A treatment program focuses on helping you develop or recover function over time.

Should I bring my job description?

Yes, if available. Information about essential duties, physical demands, and relevant restrictions helps clarify the purpose of the evaluation.

Does an FCE automatically clear me to return to work?

No. Findings can inform planning, but work status and clearance must be discussed with the provider managing your injury and the parties responsible for those decisions.

How do I schedule an FCE?

Call our office to discuss the referral, authorization, evaluation purpose, and information needed before scheduling.

Patient education: American Society of Hand Therapists: FCE & Work Rehabilitation. Your evaluation and referral guide the approach appropriate to your needs.
